3D PRINT PASS · PRINT STUDIO OPERATING MANUAL

Find and use current Studio controls, from opening a model to an evidence-backed handoff.

This is the public operating reference for Print Studio and Direct Edit. Use the illustrated paths when you are learning a workflow; use the searchable control appendix when you need one exact button, field, shortcut, result, limit, or access rule.

Print Studio workspace showing the model canvas, workflow tools, and inspection findings.
One workspace. Visible tools, model evidence, and the next action.

01 · BOUNDED QUICK START

The most direct bounded path is six deliberate decisions.

You do not need to open the full expert toolset. Each step below has one visible terminal result, so you can tell whether the workflow reached that result.

  1. Open Upload an STL or 3MF, reopen an approved saved context, or use the branded sample. Confirm the filename, dimensions, units assumption, and build fit. Terminal result: the intended model is visible and identified.
  2. Understand Read Findings, open measured-region evidence, inspect exact facts, and use the two-point ruler when you need a local distance. Terminal result: evidence or a measured value is visible.
  3. Prepare Choose orientation, scale, placement, printer, material, and one bounded fix. Read whether the control previews, commits immediately with Undo, or creates a separate artifact. Terminal result: the working model or scenario visibly changes.
  4. Cross-check Use Layers to move an X, Y, or Z inspection plane through the real STL. This checks geometry; it is not a toolpath. Terminal result: a real contour or an explicit empty-plane message appears.
  5. Slice For an eligible STL, review the bounded native settings, run readiness, generate G-code, and inspect beginning, middle, and final layers. Terminal result: visible nonzero toolpaths and verified result facts appear.
  6. Take it with you Download the prepared model, verified G-code, settings, report, plan, or handoff package you actually reviewed. Terminal result: Studio confirms that the browser accepted the file-handoff request or that the browser-local record was saved. Confirm any operating-system file save yourself.

Learn by clicking the real Studio controls

Open Guide in the Studio top bar, then choose Interactive Studio tutorials. The coach highlights the next real control but never clicks it, runs an operation, or changes the model on your behalf.

A command step advances only after your click reaches its matching terminal center result under the same operation ID. A refusal, unavailable result, cancellation, or failure remains on the step and explains what prevented completion. Slider and surface-pick steps wait for the required visible state.

You can close and resume a tutorial while the current Studio page remains open. A refresh restarts the learning sequence from the beginning instead of assuming that measurement, Undo, layer, or slicing state survived. A track stays visible but disabled with a reason when its required browser or model capability is unavailable. The tutorial itself does not read or transmit model data. The export tutorial highlights the real download controls; activating one asks the browser to download the currently admitted artifact.

Eight bounded tutorial tracks

  1. Studio in four clicks — Inspect, Fix, Prepare, and Deliver.
  2. Make the center model react — Down-facing, Edges, See-through, and Solid.
  3. Measure two real surface points — ruler, first point, second point, and distance.
  4. Change the model, then Undo — apply one visible rotation and restore it.
  5. Understand Review plan clicks — compare settings while the prepared pose stays fixed.
  6. Prepared model vs slicer settings — build geometry and download its separate settings handoff.
  7. Inspect real cross-sections — choose an axis, build contours, and move the plane.
  8. Slice and inspect real layers — pass the exact-current readiness check, build bounded toolpaths, and move through the layer stack.

02 · ANNOTATED WORKSPACE

Know which surface owns the action.

Desktop and mobile arrange these regions differently, but their jobs stay the same.

Print Studio sample workspace with the top project bar, mode rail, model viewport, contextual actions, and inspector visible.
The live sample is intended for learning. The active filename and status identify the model used by an action.
01

Project bar

Guided or Expert detail, active job, upload, undo, redo, Save plan, All Tools, Guides and help, and Review & export.

02

Mode rail

Inspect finds evidence, Fix changes the working model, Prepare sets up production, Deliver reviews output, and All Tools finds any mounted command.

03

Viewport

Model identity, view lenses, camera controls, measurement, geometry cross-sections, local slicing, and visible model interaction.

04

Context actions

Fast actions related to the current mode. The list changes with selection, plan, model capability, and active result.

05

Inspector

Findings, exact fields, repair controls, setup, result evidence, and export controls. Close it to gain canvas space; reopen it from a mode or action.

06

Status and Help

The bottom status explains the latest terminal state. Support Guide opens customer help; it cannot edit the model, slice, download, or approve safety.

Guided

Shows the most common bounded path first. Expert commands remain discoverable through All Tools, which explains why a command is unavailable instead of pretending it does not exist.

Expert

Shows direct settings, technical evidence, repair, slicing, economics, and production controls. Expert presentation does not grant a paid plan or bypass a model requirement.

03 · OPENING, IMPORTING, AND SOURCE TRUTH

Confirm the source before changing the working copy.

OPEN

Upload and analyze a model

  1. Choose the upload action in the project bar or model menu.
  2. Select one supported STL or 3MF.
  3. The selected file is sent to this site's analysis endpoint for the current response; this action does not create an account copy or save a live workspace.
  4. Wait for the filename, dimensions, fit, and findings to update.
  5. If admission is refused, the prior source stays active.
SAMPLE

3D Print Pass challenge model

The sample exercises real Studio rendering, layer cross-sections, and eligible workflows. Its evidence is not evidence about a later upload.

CONTEXT

Saved job or project reference

A saved Print Score or project can reopen its recorded analysis context. Re-upload the original STL or 3MF before editing or preparing geometry. Native browser slicing requires a closed-manifold STL; for 3MF, build the prepared model and continue in trusted production slicer software.

ROLLBACK

Untouched source

Restore exact original returns to the admitted bytes. It is different from Undo, which walks reversible working-state commands.

04 · INSPECT

View controls answer different questions without editing the source.

Solid

Returns to the standard shaded preview.

Down-facing

Highlights sampled faces whose orientation may affect supports or surface quality.

Edges

Shows the triangle network only for admitted, unsampled preview topology. Sampled or malformed topology returns to Solid with a visible withheld explanation. Dense edges do not by themselves prove a defect.

See-through

Uses transparent rendering to inspect internal overlap and multiple parts.

Reset / Zoom

Restores the camera or changes magnification. Neither changes model scale.

Top / Iso / Front / Back / Left / Right / Bottom

Moves only the inspection camera.

Expand preview

Uses more screen space and keeps the current inspection state.

Measured region

Shows only geometry that directly produced the finding when that evidence exists.

TWO-POINT RULER

Two visible points produce one visible distance.

  1. Turn on the rulerSelect the ruler button. The readout begins with “Pick two points.”
  2. Pick the beginningThe first marker appears and the readout changes to “First point set.”
  3. Pick the endA second marker and connecting line appear, and the millimeter distance appears in the same viewport toolbar beside the ruler.
  4. ClearUse the eraser. Ruler state remains only in the live tab.

Measure exact facts is separate. It reads full-source bounds, surface area, footprint, diagonal, and triangle count rather than two picked points.

05 · GEOMETRY CROSS-SECTIONS

Move the slice plane—not just the camera.

Layers now computes real intersections on all three axes. Z remains the familiar bottom-to-top default.

Print Studio Layers view showing the X, Y, and Z slice-direction selector, a real model contour, and the movable cross-section position slider.
The selected axis controls the geometry calculation. The position slider moves through the calculated planes on that axis.
X-axis

Left ↔ right

Produces a Y/Z side projection. Useful for internal height changes viewed from the side.

Y-axis

Front ↔ back

Produces an X/Z front projection. Useful for wall and cavity changes through depth.

Z-axis

Bottom ↔ top

Produces the traditional X/Y top-down contour. This remains the default.

  1. Choose LayersThe 3D model view yields to the local cross-section stage. No file is uploaded by this action.
  2. Choose X, Y, or ZSlice direction changes the worker’s real intersection axis.Changing direction invalidates the prior stack; click Build model cross-sections to calculate the new axis.
  3. Set spacingSmaller spacing creates more calculated planes and more browser work. The bounded preview opens at 0.60 mm; you can choose 0.05–2.00 mm.
  4. Build model cross-sectionsThe worker reads the active STL and returns real contour segments.Cancel stops the disposable worker without changing the model.
  5. Move positionThe slider travels through all planes on the selected axis and reports the measured millimeter position.Studio initially chooses a nearby non-empty plane.
  6. Read the resultPlane, position, crossing lines, closed outlines, and stack count update together. An empty plane now says so instead of showing a silent blank canvas.
CAMERA

Iso, Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, Bottom

Moves the 3D inspection camera only. It does not change cross-section math or print orientation.

BUILD ORIENTATION

Bottom, Front, Back, Left, Right, Top

Physically rotates the prepared model, centers it, places it on the bed, and requires layers or toolpaths to be rebuilt.

CROSS-SECTION PLANE

X, Y, or Z plus position

Changes the real geometry plane used by Layers. It does not rotate the model and does not create G-code.

06 · FIX AND PREPARE

Each geometry action has a scope, proof, and rollback path.

Transform and sizeFree · working model

Select model establishes the target. Move, Rotate, and Scale choose pointer behavior. Exact X/Y/Z position, rotation, and scale fields provide numeric fallback. Apply exact values commits those fields; Cancel drag stops only the active gesture.

Interpret as inches / millimeters changes physical scale immediately. Target-size axis and value instead stage a numbered, nonmutating center draft in 0.01 mm steps; only a valid Resize proportionally action within the supported 1–10,000% preparation range changes reversible preparation. Blank, off-step, or out-of-range target values are refused rather than rounded, clamped, or treated as zero. Mirror X/Y/Z shows a labeled view-only center reflection and creates a separately verified mirrored export; active working geometry stays unchanged until that artifact is explicitly loaded. Center on bed and Place on bed control placement.

Orientation and fitFree · measured guidance

Lay flat, 90° X/Y/Z rotations, and the six Put face on build plate controls can change reversible prepared orientation. Find the best side and Fit to printer measure ranked candidates and immediately apply the top result only when it differs from working preparation; their center result says whether Undo was created. Alternate candidates follow the same rule. Fit does not simulate supports, toolpaths, or toolhead clearance.

Orientation guidance does not guarantee adhesion, support behavior, strength, or finish. Rebuild Layers or Slice after an orientation change.

Guarded cleanup and repairProduction pass or paid plan · fail closed

Check bounded cleanup previews exact duplicate faces, collapsed faces, and normal-direction work. The three cleanup checkboxes define the bounded operation. Download verified cleanup appears only after supported postconditions pass and creates a separate artifact; the original remains active.

Discover open boundaries, candidate selection, reset, cancel, and Repair selected opening form the main triangular-hole workflow. Repair verifies the one-triangle result and directly activates it through the canonical model transaction; there is no separate Preview or Apply step. Download is a separate artifact handoff. Reset clears candidates and repair output without undoing active geometry; use Show exact original again for the exact canonical rollback. Direct Edit repair is a different workflow and retains its own Preview, Apply, and Undo states.

Split, cut, and multi-part layoutProduction pass or paid plan · packaged rollback

Separate connected parts packages each supported shell with the untouched original. The guarded Cut workflow chooses X/Y/Z, moves from 5% to 95%, builds two capped parts, verifies both, and packages rollback material.

Add files, bed margin, part spacing, Find a bed layout, sample parts, and Download laid-out bed bundle use rectangular bounds. They do not simulate supports, purge structures, gantry clearance, or toolpaths.

Make It WorkProduction pass or paid plan · guided rebuild

Rebuild and show verified changes runs the supported guided sequence. Progress, cancellation, before/after evidence, Download rebuilt STL, and Restore exact original remain separate visible actions.

07 · NATIVE SLICING AND G-CODE

Geometry, toolpaths, and machine instructions are three different things.

Print Studio native Slice result showing the verified G-code message, enabled download action, and nonzero layers, paths, extrusion, and file size.
A successful native slice is not a blank canvas: the independent parser admits up to 150,000 toolpath segments, exposes nonzero result facts, enables the verified download, and makes the admitted layer range available for inspection. The canvas independently paints at most 120,000 segments so a larger admitted result stays responsive.
LAYERS

Geometry intersection

X/Y/Z contours through the STL. No printer path or machine commands.

SLICE

Generated toolpath

Bounded local FDM shells, infill, optional brim, and reviewed temperatures for an eligible STL.

G-CODE

Machine instruction file

Generated by the native path or opened from an existing slicer. Preview never executes it.

Slice this model

Check slice readiness must accept a receipt bound to the exact active STL, physical preparation, and native settings. Changing the source, preparation, or any native setting invalidates that receipt and generated output; run the check again before Slice.

Build orientation
Bottom, Front, Back, Left, Right, or Top physically rotates the model before horizontal toolpaths are generated.
Layer height
0.05–0.32 mm in the visible native controls; lower values create more layers.
Nozzle / line width
Defines the reviewed extrusion geometry assumptions.
Perimeters
One to three perimeters create nested shell paths.
Infill
0–100% bounded alternating infill.
Bed adhesion / brim lines
None or a real first-layer brim, with one to ten lines.
Nozzle / bed target
Optional temperature commands. Blank means not set by this path.
Print / travel speed
Reviewed motion assumptions, still subject to printer and firmware validation.
  1. Run Check slice readiness.
  2. Resolve blocking findings or review explicit warnings.
  3. Choose Slice this model; Cancel requests a stop, and the status reports the final operation state.
  4. Inspect layers, shells, adhesion, temperature sequence, paths, and extrusion.
  5. Download verified G-code only after the non-empty result is admitted.

Open existing G-code

  1. Choose Or open existing G-code. File selection remains local.
  2. Use the local layer scrubber and Show travel moves.
  3. Keep the limits distinct: 150,000 segments is the admission ceiling; 120,000 is the canvas paint budget, so an otherwise valid result between them remains accepted with bounded drawing.
  4. When entitled and deliberately chosen, Upload for server preview sends that file to the same-site bounded fallback.
  5. Upload & inspect commands performs static command review; it never runs firmware.
  6. Use the filament and cost estimator only after its diameter, density, price, and waste assumptions are correct.

Always verify: target printer, firmware dialect, units, coordinate mode, homing, extrusion mode, temperatures, motion limits, tools, fans, and start/end routines.

08 · RESCUE AND HUMAN HANDOFF

Work backward from the print symptom without inventing a diagnosis.

  1. Choose the rescue goalState whether you want to repair, explain, reprint, or prepare a handoff.
  2. Select real symptomsSize, first layer, stringing, layer shift, warp, brittleness, or small-detail problems remain explicit user observations.
  3. Add contextRecord what changed, machine/material facts, and what was already tried.
  4. Build ordered rescue planStudio combines admitted model evidence and user symptoms into a deterministic sequence.
  5. Use the result actionsOpen model tools, validate the checklist, or download the rescue plan.
  6. Choose a handoffDraft an unposted Community question or build a review-only vendor packet. Review evidence and privacy before opening or downloading either.

Each action may first send the active STL to this site's measurement endpoint. The separate draft or packet request receives allowlisted measurements and the relevant printer/material, goal or symptom, and requested-service fields—not model bytes. Studio returns a reviewable draft or packet; it does not silently post to Community or contact a vendor.

09 · SETUP, ESTIMATES, AND REVIEW

Keep one coherent production scenario.

Quick experiments

Draft settings, Fine layers, High infill, and Balanced settings preserve selected material, quoted scale, and the exact prepared pose while producing a labeled settings receipt. The names describe only settings they actually change; they do not promise strength, support reduction, or printability, and they never rotate, rescale, slice, commit, or export geometry.

Profile

Part intent, shell strategy, material, quoted scale, quantity, nozzle, layer height, and infill belong to the same reviewed scenario. Current prepared pose is read-only here; physical orientation and scale remain Fix/Prepare actions.

Machine

Printer, build volume, nozzle, maximum speeds, hotend ceiling, and bed ceiling define readiness boundaries—not an automatic printer connection.

Economics

Machine rate, labor, material cost, waste, markup, failure allowance, tax, and quantity produce planning estimates from visible assumptions.

Compare plans

The five current Review candidates preserve the exact prepared pose, selected material, scale, machine and profile dimensions, quantity, calibration, and economics inputs. Selecting a candidate posts its planning-time ratio and exact changed assumptions and settings in plain language. This is a settings-only comparison, so the prepared pose stays fixed. Review never flips or moves the model. Use Find and use steadiest side under Fix when you want a measured physical reorientation. Working STL geometry and exported bytes remain unchanged. Save plan separately stores up to eight scenarios in this browser for no more than 90 days after the last save; they do not follow you to another browser or device.

Planning time

Planning time is an estimate, not sliced time. An absolute planning estimate can use measured or fallback mass, selected scale³, material, calibration, and setup factors. Across the five candidates, time differences come from nozzle, layer height, infill, and quality while prepared pose and analyzed support stay fixed. Material, scale, machine, quantity, calibration, and economics inputs also remain fixed within that comparison. Generated or inspected G-code remains authoritative.

Review & export

The prepared-model action produces independently verified geometry bytes, admits those exact bytes as the active center model, and then asks the browser to download them. Slicer settings are a separate text/profile artifact, not a prepared model or G-code result; reports, saved plans, outcome records, and other handoff files also remain distinct.

10 · DIRECT EDIT

Point, change, verify, and keep the command reversible.

Direct Edit is the physical mesh workspace. Its local STL is deliberately labeled unverified; use Send to Studio for the measured production path.

Direct Edit Advanced workspace with the model canvas, physical tool rail, Properties inspector, model views, parts, and status areas visible.
Advanced shows the full tool rail and exact Properties fields. Disabled tools explain the missing model, selection, topology, access, or operation context.

Workspace actions

  • Open model admits a supported local source.
  • Send to Studio returns the working result for verification.
  • Local STL downloads the current unverified working mesh.
  • Guided / Advanced changes presentation inside Direct Edit. Main Studio calls its corresponding full-detail view Expert.
  • Undo / Redo walks reversible Direct Edit commands.
  • Properties opens exact selection fields.
  • Close returns focus to main Studio.

Physical tool rail

  • Select chooses an object.
  • Move / Rotate / Scale uses visible handles and snap values.
  • Set Base chooses a real face for the build plate.
  • Measure creates direct-edit measurement evidence.
  • Lasso selects a bounded vertex region.
  • Pull / Push / Smooth / Flatten edits the selected surface with radius, strength, and falloff.
  • Add / Hole creates primitive tools and boolean Add, Remove, or Intersect operations.
  • Cut shows a movable plane, accepts X/Y/Z, then creates two capped parts.
  • Repair finds and repairs a selected open boundary.
  • All tools opens the searchable Direct Edit command surface.

Properties and supporting surfaces

  • Name, dimensions, vertices, triangles, and selected count describe the active object.
  • Position, rotation, scale, and snap fields provide exact values.
  • Simplify changes the kept-triangle ratio and invalidates stale topology selections.
  • Top, Front, Right, Iso, Frame, and Dims control inspection.
  • Print View changes outside/section presentation.
  • Parts selects visible assembly nodes.
  • Hollow opens the bounded hollowing workflow when available. A preview remains bound to its initiating click and exact model, transform, revision, scale, and drain inputs; a later mismatch is stale and cannot unlock Apply.

Describe an edit

  • Enter one clear supported action.
  • Review edit plan compiles it into allowlisted commands.
  • Read assumptions, unsupported intent, geometry effects, access, and credit consent.
  • Apply plan runs the entire reviewed ordered plan as one exclusive transaction; the listed commands are not independently selectable.
  • Success appears only after the ordered commands advance the document revision and the final assertions pass. A later failure or cancellation must either restore the exact pre-plan geometry and Undo/Redo history or explicitly warn that rollback could not be proven and a partial center edit may remain.
  • If the local compiler cannot understand the request, optional AI remains off unless you check the versioned disclosure for that request. The server rejects missing or outdated consent before checking credits or contacting a provider.
  • When you opt in, the configured AI provider receives your prompt; source hash; document and topology revisions; active and available object/boundary identifiers; active node kind; selection counts/state; and undo/redo counts.
  • Studio adds no source-filename, model-byte, mesh-vertex, or G-code field to the provider request. Anything you type in the prompt is sent. The response is restricted to the bounded command-plan schema and is validated before review.

11 · AI, HELP, PLANS, AND CREDITS

Advice, access, and geometry authority stay separate.

AI Help and recommendation explanation

Customer Help can explain navigation, documented workflows, limits, and public product behavior. Finding explanation may summarize deterministic evidence when enabled and requested.

When you request an AI explanation, the configured AI provider receives the deterministic score and risk; dimensions and triangle count; open/non-manifold edge counts and down-facing percentage; the selected goal and deterministic recommendation; and the applicable finding, slicer-setting, or next-check fields. It receives no filename, model bytes, mesh vertices, G-code, printer name, material name, or free-form symptom text.

Neither can edit geometry, run a slicer, release a download, operate a printer, expose administrator material, or declare a print safe.

Described Edit

Supported wording becomes a bounded candidate plan. Deterministic schema validation, a visible review, explicit Apply, reversible handlers, and final Studio verification remain required.

12 · SAVING, RECOVERY, UNDO, AND DOWNLOADS

Signing in does not autosave a live Studio workspace.

  1. Live tabTransforms, measurements, undo/redo, Direct Edit revisions, slice settings, generated layers, and generated G-code live here.
  2. Optional source restoreIndexedDB may retain only the original accepted source or approved saved-job pointer for about 24 hours.
  3. Save plan and outcomeAt most eight planning scenarios and 30 outcomes per printer/material, plus repair completion, stay in this browser for no more than 90 days after the last save. Outcome notes can contain what you type; none of these records contains working geometry.
  4. Account recordA project or Print Score run can retain its own account-scoped analysis context and source reference, not live Studio edit history.
  5. Browser file handoffStudio can verify the exact STL, 3MF, G-code, JSON, report, or ZIP bytes and confirm that the browser accepted the handoff request. Confirm the file exists at your operating-system destination before relying on it.

13 · TROUBLESHOOTING BY VISIBLE STATE

A withheld result should tell you what to do next.

Layers opens but the canvas looks empty

Read the live status. Choose X, Y, or Z, rebuild, and move the position slider. Studio now selects a nearby non-empty starting plane and labels a legitimately empty plane instead of leaving a silent blank. Layers supports STL only.

The Slice panel appears but no toolpath is drawn

Scroll within the Slice stage to its settings, run Check slice readiness, then choose Slice this model. Confirm the source is an eligible closed-manifold STL within 8 MB and 100,000 triangles. A selected file or opened panel is not a completed slice.

A button is visible but disabled

Open All Tools or read the nearby status. The usual causes are no admitted model, no selection, incompatible topology or format, missing Expert presentation in main Studio, missing Advanced presentation in Direct Edit, missing result state, active operation, or plan/credit access.

A repair or cut was withheld

The operation failed closed because its topology or postconditions were ambiguous. Move the cut plane, choose another supported opening, clean the source in trusted software, or keep the untouched original.

G-code preview refuses a file

Confirm the file is G-code, within 16 MB, and inside the parser’s bounded line/command envelope. Unsupported or suspicious commands remain visible for review; Studio never executes them.

Direct Edit opens but a physical tool is disabled

Load a compatible model, select the required object or region, switch to Advanced when necessary, and read the footer status. Some solid tools require closed topology or a plan.

The browser stopped or an operation was canceled

If the source is still active, retry after reducing model size or work. Otherwise, reopen the source. Close other heavy tabs or use trusted desktop software for a model outside the browser envelope.

My work is missing after returning

Only the admitted source may be restorable when optional browser recovery was enabled. Re-upload the source, reopen saved planning assumptions if needed, and use only files whose operating-system save you confirmed as the durable handoff.
